What are the effective methods for eliminating mosquitoes and flies in livestock farms?

The disinfection work in the breeding farm is of utmost importance. However, during summer, mosquitoes and flies are everywhere, which causes great difficulties for the disinfection process. After disinfection, the mosquitoes and flies will spread pathogens, making many farmers suffer greatly. How can we eliminate the mosquitoes and flies in the breeding farm once and for all? Let’s share my experience below. Currently, the majority of breeding farms use the method of regular pesticide spraying. This method is not environmentally friendly and is prone to generating drug resistance. But we have no choice but to do so. Now, I will introduce several conventional methods and scientific methods.

1. Drug spraying: Generally, we use chemical drugs for spraying. Some also use powdered drugs for extermination. The most commonly used one is cypermethrin. It is sprayed using a backpack sprayer. Powdered drugs are mostly sweet-smelling to attract and trap mosquitoes and flies.

2. Veterinary medicine: In pig farms, the commonly used drug is ciprofloxacin. It has a very effective inhibitory and eliminating effect on several common fly larvae and other organisms. Some of this drug can be added to the feed, causing the larvae and pupae to undergo morphological distortions.

3. Physical Mosquito and Fly Control

Using Fly-Killing Lights: Fly-killing lights are devices that use electric shock to kill mosquitoes and flies. They can be installed on the walls or ceilings of the livestock farm.

Using Air Curtain Machines: Air curtain machines can generate high-speed air currents, blowing mosquitoes and flies away. At the same time, they can also remove dust and odors from the air.

Installing Screen Windows: Mainly for small ventilation windows and exhaust fans, attaching screens to these windows ensures that there will be no mosquitoes flying in when the exhaust fan is turned off. Although it has some impact on the exhaust, the effect is still quite good.

Using Air Purifiers: Air purifiers can filter out bacteria and viruses in the air, reducing the growth of bacteria in the livestock farm.

4. Biological Mosquito and Fly Control

Utilizing beneficial insects: Certain beneficial insects can effectively control the population of mosquitoes and flies, such as spiders, bats, and swallows. Introducing these beneficial insects into the breeding facility can help curb the reproduction of mosquitoes and flies.

Using microorganisms: Some microorganisms can parasitize within mosquitoes and flies, such as bacteria and fungi. Through these microorganisms, the population of mosquitoes and flies can be effectively controlled.

5. Environmental Control

(1) Adopting the manure drainage board system: Currently, most livestock farms have adopted this system. The manure excreted by the animals can be directly washed away, resulting in less manure on top and relatively fewer mosquitoes and flies.

(2) Feeding Management: Odor and temperature are the main conditions for the breeding of mosquitoes and flies. We can adopt reasonable ventilation methods, such as using large exhaust fans for ventilation, to promptly remove the odor in the barn. At the same time, harmful gases produced can also be discharged. This can, to a certain extent, control the outbreak of mosquitoes and flies.

6. Other methods

Use fly nets: Set up fly nets around the livestock farm to prevent mosquitoes and flies from entering the farm.

Use fermented beds: Fermented beds are a type of mattress that uses microbial fermentation to convert manure and sewage into organic fertilizer. They can also inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes and flies.

Use mosquito-repellent plants: Mosquito-repellent plants are plants with mosquito-repelling effects. You can plant them in the livestock farm to help repel mosquitoes and flies.
