As the temperature rises, livestock farms need to pay attention to mosquito and fly control. Summer is the period when mosquitoes and flies reproduce most vigorously. No matter what kind of livestock shed it is, there are more of them than at any other time of the year. Mosquitoes and flies not only harm the growth of poultry, but also carry bacterial diseases. So how can we effectively control mosquitoes and flies?
The harm of mosquitoes and flies to livestock
Mosquitoes and flies cause different harms to different livestock. For example, for broiler chickens, mosquitoes and flies can spread chicken pox. Moreover, mosquitoes and flies carry a series of pathogens that can cause harm, often infecting broiler chickens with white feather disease, which is also known as mosquito disease in some regions. However, for pig herds, mosquitoes carry pathogens, causing a series of diseases such as swine eperythrozoonosis, encephalitis B, Salmonella, swine dysentery, and contagious gastroenteritis in the pig herd.
Methods for Mosquito Control in Livestock Farms
1. Hardware measures management
Some farmers’ livestock farms are semi-open, with flies and mosquitoes entering and leaving freely. In such situations, even the most basic hardware requirements are not met. How can we get rid of mosquitoes and flies? Killing them will just bring more, and then killing them again, and this cycle continues. It is recommended to install window screens at the open areas of the livestock farm. This will not only keep mosquitoes out but also not affect the ventilation of the farm.
2. Management around the farm
Remove all the weeds, sewage and sludge-like substances around the farm. Also, the farm’s manure must be disposed of promptly. Because these areas are the breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies, and where there is sewage, there must be mosquitoes and flies.
3. Implement effective mosquito control measures
Traditional mosquito repellents are generally very effective. For instance, veterinary mosquito repellent sprays and mosquito repellent powders are both highly effective! Additionally, you can place several buckets of soapy water in the living area. The scent of the soap will attract mosquitoes and flies, and once they fall into the water, they will drown.
