Which mosquito repellent product is really safe and effective?

Mosquitoes are here every year, how can one avoid them? To avoid being harassed by these blood-sucking creatures, humans have been constantly developing various countermeasures. From passive defenses like mosquito nets and window screens, to active attacks with insecticides and mosquito repellents, ineffective yet popular “all-purpose” bug sprays, to the recent viral product – the mosquito repellent wristband – which belongs to a different category, which one of these groups can truly achieve true safety and effectiveness?

1.Pyrethroid——A powerful tool for active extermination

The approaches to dealing with mosquitoes can be divided into two schools: active elimination and passive defense. Among them, the active elimination school has a long history and its effects are obvious. Among the household mosquito repellents such as mosquito coils, electric heat mosquito sheets, electric heat mosquito liquid, and aerosol insecticides, the main active ingredients are pyrethroids. It is a broad-spectrum insecticide that can control various pests and has a strong contact killing effect. Its mechanism of action is to disrupt the insects’ nervous system, causing them to go from excitement, convulsion to paralysis and death. When using mosquito repellents, in order to better kill mosquitoes, it is usually necessary to keep the indoor environment in a closed state to maintain a relatively stable level of pyrethroids.

The most notable advantage of pyrethroids is their high efficiency. They can kill mosquitoes with a relatively low concentration. Although pyrethroids can be metabolized and excreted after being inhaled by the human body, they still have a slight toxicity and can have certain effects on the human nervous system. Long-term exposure may cause symptoms such as dizziness, headache, abnormal nerve sensations, and even nerve paralysis. Therefore, when using mosquito repellents during sleep, it is best not to place them near the bedhead to avoid inhaling air with an excessively high concentration of pyrethroids and causing discomfort reactions.

In addition, aerosol insecticides often contain harmful aromatic substances. People with allergic conditions should be cautious when using aerosol insecticides. For example, after spraying in an appropriate amount, leave the room immediately and close the doors and windows. Wait for a few hours before coming back to open the windows for ventilation. This way, both the effectiveness of killing mosquitoes and safety can be ensured.

According to the relevant provisions of the “Pesticide Management Regulations” of the country, any product for preventing, eliminating or controlling mosquitoes, flies, etc., that claims to have “mosquito-killing” or “mosquito-repellent” effects must obtain a pesticide registration certificate number and mark the toxicity on the packaging. Therefore, here we suggest that when purchasing mosquito-killing or mosquito-repellent products, everyone should be able to identify the pesticide registration certificate number.

Currently, the commonly available pyrethroid pesticides on the market mainly include tetrafluoroethyl pyrethroid and chlorofluoroethyl pyrethroid. Studies have shown that chlorofluoroethyl pyrethroid is more effective in knocking down mosquitoes than tetrafluoroethyl pyrethroid, but tetrafluoroethyl pyrethroid is safer in terms of safety. Therefore, when purchasing mosquito control products, one can make a specific choice based on the users. For families without children, products containing chlorofluoroethyl pyrethroid are more effective; if there are children in the family, then products containing tetrafluoroethyl pyrethroid are safer.

2. Insect repellent sprays and mosquito repellent liquids——They protect you by deceiving the mosquitoes’ sense of smell

After talking about proactive killing, let’s now discuss passive defense. This school is somewhat similar to the “Golden Bell Cover, Iron Shirt” in Jin Yong’s novels. It doesn’t engage in direct confrontation with mosquitoes but instead uses certain methods to keep these “blood-sucking creatures” away from us and isolate them outside the safe zone.

Among them, insect repellent sprays and mosquito repellent liquids are the main representatives. Their mosquito-repellent principle is to spray them on the skin and clothes, using the unpleasant smells that mosquitoes dislike or forming a protective layer around the skin to interfere with the mosquitoes’ sense of smell, preventing them from smelling the special odors emitted by the human body, thereby achieving the effect of keeping mosquitoes away.

Many people believe that the flower water spray, which also has the effect of “repelling mosquitoes”, is a perfume product made with flower water oil as the main fragrance ingredient and alcohol and other substances. Its main functions are to remove dirt, kill bacteria, prevent heat rash and relieve itching. Although it can also have a certain mosquito-repellent effect, compared with insect repellent sprays and mosquito repellent liquids, both in terms of the mechanism of action and the main ingredients, they are completely different, and the two cannot be used interchangeably.

3. Mosquito repellent wristbands and mosquito repellent patches——Whether they are effective or not depends on the core ingredients

In recent years, the variety of mosquito repellent products on the market has become increasingly diverse. Many wearable mosquito repellent products such as mosquito repellent patches, mosquito repellent clasps, mosquito repellent watches, mosquito repellent wristbands, and mosquito repellent pendants have gained popularity among many people, especially parents of children, because they do not require direct contact with the skin. These products usually attach to the body and use the emitted odor of the medicine to form a protective layer around the body, interfering with the mosquitoes’ sense of smell, thereby achieving the purpose of repelling mosquitoes.

When purchasing this type of mosquito repellent products, in addition to checking the pesticide registration number, it is also necessary to check whether they contain truly effective ingredients and select products with appropriate ingredients and concentrations according to the usage scenario and target user.

Currently, the four safe and effective mosquito repellent ingredients registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are: DEET, Picaridin, IR3535/Immergen, and Lemon Eucalyptus Oil (OLE) or its extract, Lemon Eucalyptol (PMD). Among them, the first three are chemical synthetics, while the latter one is a plant-based component. In terms of effectiveness, DEET is highly effective and lasts for a long time, Picaridin and IR3535/Immergen come next, and the duration of Lemon Eucalyptus Oil’s repellency is relatively short.

From the perspective of safety, since DEET has a certain irritancy to the skin, generally we recommend that for children, products with a DEET content of less than 10% should be chosen. For infants under 6 months, products containing DEET should not be used. IR3535/Immergen has no toxic side effects on the skin and does not penetrate into the skin, and is currently recognized as a relatively safe mosquito repellent product that can be used daily. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil can be extracted from natural substances and is safe and non-irritating to the skin, but the terpene and aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds it contains may cause allergies. Therefore, in many European and American countries, it is not recommended for children under 3 years old.

4. For pregnant women and young babies——It is more recommended to adopt the safe and effective physical mosquito repellent methods

Whether it is mosquito repellent spray, mosquito repellent water or mosquito repellent patches, they all belong to chemical mosquito repellents. Although chemical mosquito repellent methods are effective and convenient, for pregnant women and babies under six months old, it is still recommended to use safer physical mosquito repellent methods.

Currently, the physical mosquito repellent products on the market mainly include mosquito repellent lamps and electric mosquito swatters. The shape of the mosquito swatter is similar to a tennis racket, and there is high-voltage static electricity between the metal wires. Just by swinging the “racket”, the unlucky mosquitoes that touch the wire will be electrocuted. However, due to the electricity, it is recommended for adults to use it. The mosquito repellent lamp uses the light attraction characteristic of mosquitoes to attract them, allowing them to be sucked in, stuck, or electrocuted, and eventually dried out and die. The operating decibel of the mosquito repellent lamp is relatively low, and it basically does not affect sleep. The safety coefficient is relatively high, but it should be noted that it needs to be set at a position that children cannot reach.
