Shenzhou 15th brought back ratooning rice, how should pesticides keep up with the development?

On June 4, 2023, the fourth batch of space science experimental samples from the Chinese space station returned to the ground with the return module of the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft. The space application system, along with the return module of the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft, carried out a total of 15 experimental samples for scientific projects, including life experimental samples such as cells, nematodes, Arabidopsis, ratooning rice, and other experimental samples, with a total weight of over 20 kilograms.

What is Ratooning Rice?

Ratooning rice is a mode of rice cultivation with a long history in China, dating back to 1700 years ago. Its characteristic is that after a season of rice ripens, only about two-thirds of the upper part of the rice plant is cut, the rice panicles are collected, and the lower one-third of the plants and roots are left behind. Fertilization and cultivation are carried out to allow it to grow another season of rice.

What is the difference between rice spent in space and rice on Earth? Will its tolerance to pesticides change? These are all issues that people engaged in pesticide research and development need to consider.

Henan Province Wheat Germination Event

The latest information released by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Henan Province shows that the large-scale continuous rainy weather since May 25th has seriously affected the normal ripening and harvesting of wheat. This rainfall process highly coincides with the wheat maturity period in the southern region of Henan, lasting for 6 days, covering 17 provincial-level cities and the Jiyuan Demonstration Zone in the province, with a greater impact on Zhumadian, Nanyang and other places.

Sudden heavy rain can cause wheat to collapse, making it difficult to harvest and thus reducing wheat yield. Wheat soaked in rain is highly susceptible to mold and germination, which may lead to mold and pollution, affecting the harvest.

Some people have analyzed that with weather forecasts and warnings, farmers did not harvest wheat in advance due to insufficient maturity. If this situation is true, it is also a breakthrough point where pesticides can play a role. Plant growth regulators are indispensable in the process of crop growth. If plant growth regulators can develop to ripen crops in a short period of time, allowing them to be harvested earlier, this maybe reduce losses.

Overall, China’s crop development technology has been improving, especially for food crops. As an essential pesticide in the growth process of crops, it must closely follow the development of crops in order to play its maximum role and contribute to the development of crops in China!
