The use of household pesticides to control pests and disease vectors in homes and gardens is widespread in high-income countries (HICs) and is becoming increasingly common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These pesticides are often sold in local shops and informal markets for public use. The risks associated with the use of these products to humans and the environment cannot be underestimated. Inappropriate use, storage and disposal of household pesticides, often due to lack of training in pesticide use or risks, and poor understanding of label information, result in numerous poisonings and self-harm cases each year. This guidance document aims to assist governments in strengthening the regulation of household pesticides and inform the public about effective pest and pesticide control measures in and around the home, thereby reducing the risks associated with the use of household pesticides by non-professional users. The guidance document is also intended for the pesticide industry and non-governmental organizations.
How do families use pesticides
The selected products must have a pesticide registration (sanitary pesticide) certificate and a production license. Expired products are not required.
Before purchasing and using pesticides, you should read the product labels carefully. Product labels serve as guidelines and precautions for product usage. Be sure to read it carefully, pay attention to its active ingredients, usage methods, no restrictions on application occasions, how to avoid poisoning and environmental pollution, and how to store it.
Pesticides that need to be prepared with water should have an appropriate concentration. Both too high and too low concentrations are not conducive to the control of pests.
The prepared insecticide should be used immediately after preparation and should not be stored for more than one week.
Do not apply pesticides. Aim at the target according to the object to be treated. If mosquitoes like to stay in dark and damp places, cockroaches mostly hide in various crevices; Most pests enter the room through the screen door. Spraying pesticides in these places will be twice as effective with half the effort.
