Florfenicol side effect

Florfenicol is a synthetic monofluoro derivative of thiamphenicol, the molecular formula is C12H14Cl2FNO4S, white or off-white crystalline powder, odorless, very slightly soluble in water and chloroform, slightly soluble in glacial acetic acid, soluble in Methanol, ethanol. It is a new broad-spectrum antibiotic of chloramphenicol for veterinary use, which was successfully developed in the late 1980s.

It was first marketed in Japan in 1990. In 1993, Norway approved the drug to treat furuncle of salmon. In 1995, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Mexico and Spain approved the drug for the treatment of bovine respiratory bacterial diseases. It is also approved for use as a feed additive for pigs in Japan and Mexico to prevent and treat bacterial diseases in pigs, and China has now approved the drug.

It is an antibiotic drug, which produces a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic effect by inhibiting the activity of peptidyltransferase, and has a broad antibacterial spectrum, including various Gram-positive and negative bacteria and mycoplasma. Sensitive bacteria include bovine and porcine Haemophilus, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Pneumococcus, Influenza bacillus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Chlamydia, Leptospira, Rickettsia, etc. This product can diffuse into bacterial cells through lipid solubility, mainly acts on the 50s subunit of bacterial 70s ribosome, inhibits transpeptidase, hinders the growth of peptidase, inhibits the formation of peptide chains, thereby preventing protein synthesis, achieving Antibacterial purpose. This product is rapidly absorbed by oral administration, widely distributed, has a long half-life, high blood drug concentration, and long blood drug maintenance time.
In recent years, many small and medium-sized pig farms have used florfenicol for treatment regardless of the situation of the pigs, and used florfenicol as a magic drug. In fact, this is very dangerous. It has a good therapeutic effect on swine diseases caused by Gram-positive and negative bacteria and mycoplasma, especially after the combination of florfenicol and doxycycline, the effect is enhanced, and it is effective in treating porcine thoracic swine atrophic rhinitis chain. Cocci, etc. have good curative effect.
However, the reason why it is dangerous to use florfenicol regularly is because there are many side effects of florfenicol, and long-term use of florfenicol does more harm than good. For example, pig friends should not ignore these points.

1. If there are viral diseases such as pseudorabies swine fever with blue ear ring in the pig farm, the use of florfenicol for treatment will often become an accomplice of these viral diseases, so if the above diseases are infected and have subsequent When infected with other pig diseases, do not use florfenicol for treatment, it will aggravate the disease.
2. Florfenicol will interfere with our hematopoietic system and inhibit the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow, especially if our suckling pigs have a cold or swollen joints. Pig hair color is not good-looking, fried hair, but also show symptoms of anemia, it will also make the pig not eat long, forming a stiff pig.
3. Florfenicol is embryotoxic. If florfenicol is often used during pregnancy in sows, the resulting piglets will fail.
4. Long-term use of florfenicol will cause gastrointestinal disorders and diarrhea in pigs.
5. It is easy to cause secondary infection, such as exudative dermatitis caused by staphylococcus infection in pigs or secondary infection of some fungal dermatitis.
To sum up, florfenicol should not be used as a conventional drug. When we use other antibiotics with poor effect and are in a mixed sense (expel virus), we can use florfenicol and doxycycline on the side. Acupuncture is used to treat intractable diseases, and it is not recommended for other situations.
