Argentina’s fertilizer imports increased by 17.5% compared with the same period last year

According to data from the Secretariat of Agriculture of Argentina’s Ministry of Economy, the National Institute of Statistics (INDEC), and the Argentine Chamber of Commerce of Fertilizer and Agrochemicals Industry (CIAFA), the consumption of fertilizers in the first six months of this year increased by 12,500 tons compared with the same period last year.

This growth is closely related to the advancement of wheat cultivation. According to the data provided by the State Agricultural Administration (DNA), the current sown area of wheat has reached 6.6 million hectares.

Meanwhile, the growth in fertilizer consumption continued the upward trend seen in 2024 – after a decline from 2021 to 2023, consumption reached 4.936 billion tons in 2024. According to Fertilizar, although more than half of the fertilizers currently in use are imported, the use of domestic fertilizers is keeping pace with the overall growth.

In addition, the import volume of chemical fertilizers increased by 17.5% compared with the same period last year. As of June this year, the total import volume of nitrogen fertilizers, phosphorus fertilizers and other nutrients and mixed fertilizers reached 770,000 tons.

According to data from the Fertilizar association, in the 2024 production year, nitrogen fertilizer consumption will account for 56% of total fertilizer consumption, phosphorus fertilizer 37%, and the remaining 7% will be sulfur fertilizer, potassium fertilizer and other fertilizers.

It should be noted that the phosphate fertilizer category includes phosphate rock – which is the basic raw material for the production of phosphorus-containing compound fertilizers, and many of these compound fertilizers have already been produced in Argentina. Take superphosphate (SPT) as an example. Its usage increased by 21.2% compared to 2024, reaching 23,300 tons.

According to the information released by the State Agricultural Administration (DNA), in order to make full use of the humidity conditions brought by rainfall, several agricultural technology extension stations in wheat-growing areas have started fertilization operations in recent weeks. It is expected that by the end of 2025, the demand for fertilizers during the harvest period of major crops will increase by 8%.
